Mississauga, Ontario: Alectra Inc. announced June 25 that it had been named among the top three companies in Corporate Knights' annual sustainability ranking.
Corporate Knights released its annual Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada list, which highlights Canadian companies that are considered to be commendable sustainability performers. Alectra earned the third spot on this year's list.
The criteria for the Best 50 Corporate Citizens list are based on Corporate Knights' ranking methods that use 17 key performance indicators in the categories of resource, finance and employee management.
Alectra achieved a 19 per cent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, measured against its 2016 baseline. This was achieved by:
• Implementing a no-idling policy
• Increasing the number of hybrid and electric vehicles in the fleet
• Improving the energy efficiency of office buildings; and
• Replacing eight boilers at its Guelph office with four energy efficient units.
The information that makes up the Best 50 Corporate Citizens is collected from public companies that disclose their environmental, social and governance data. “Being transparent with this information and providing supplementary statistics in support of the data is the way of business for a sustainable future,” Corporate Knights says.
