The small environmental non-profit group Habitat Haldimand Inc. sent out its annual offer of its Great Tree Giveaway the week for February 17, 2020 as part of its Community Forest Initiative and sponsored in part by Ontario Power Generation (OPG). Haldimand residents with 2 acres or more can get up to 100 trees for a handling fee of $40 (it is thought that if people have to pay they are more likely to plant the trees) to be planted for forest, stream bank or wildlife corridor enhancements. OPG's support is indeed important. It is surprising how much other support goes into this project which has supplied nearly 300,000 trees over the years, some of them more rare Carolinian species. Volunteers collect local tree seeds, school children with willing teachers plant seed with provided soil and trays. A local nursery Konkle's without any fanfare takes the trays and cares for them until the seedlings are big enough to line out when another set of children-teachers groups plant them. Volunteers later lift the grown tree seedlings, putting them into bundles of ten, attach a label and put them back in the ground until the spring. Volunteers dig the bundles up and pack them in paper sacks according to the order and are on hand to match the order with the people picking them up along with planting instructions. Additional trees are bought from nurseries providing tree seedlings.
