Canadian Solar funded for new solar panel design

The federal government announced an investment of almost $8 million July 25 for Canadian Solar Solutions Inc. to help deliver a newer, more efficient solar panel called HiDM.

The investment will go toward the development and demonstration of high-density solar panels expected to have 20 percent greater energy efficiency than current designs. Canadian Solar Solutions will develop what it calls a first-of-its-kind shingled module technology that can be adapted to any type of solar cell, while creating more than 50 jobs for Canadian workers.

The project is funded by Natural Resources Canada's Energy Innovation Program, which supports innovative, clean energy technologies that are affordable, reliable and sustainable to further Canada's transition toward a low-carbon economy.
