Local papers list power project cancellations

The Peterborough Examiner reported July 16 that the new Ontario government has cancelled proposed projects at two locks on the Trent-Severn Waterway, at locks 24 and 31, in the Peterborough area. The cancellations are two of a total of 758 the province would not be proceeding with, as stated in announcements from the government soon after the June 7 provincial election.

IPPSO FACTO reported in the April issue that the projects had been proposed and had already passed environmental review.

A number of other community newspapers have listed local project cancellations:

• “More than 60” projects in Grey-Bruce, mostly ground-based solar: Owen Sound Sun Times

• A landfill power project in London, ON: London Free press

• Bioheat projects in Haliburton, Minden and Highlands East: Highlander News, Haliburton area

• The Ottawa Citizen mentions several, including the 50-megawatt Otter Creek Wind Farm in western Ontario and a 57.5-megawatt wind farm being developed by Invenergy. The Citizen quotes Northland Power Inc. Chief Financial Officer Paul Bradley: “There’s not a case for them to unilaterally abrogate the contracts.” Northland Power owns solar and wind farms in Ontario, but Bradley said he’s “categorically not worried about losing the value of our contracts.”
