Toronto: Solar power developer SkyPower announced May 7 plans for an estimated $1.3 billion foreign direct investment in Uzbekistan to build 1,000 MW of solar energy generation capacity throughout the country. Uzbekistan and SkyPower have signed the first Power Purchase Agreement in the country’s history, whereby the government will be purchasing power from an international and private company. Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyyoyev has signed a decree signifying the government’s full support of the project and sovereign guarantees. SkyPower will be the first independent power producer in the history of Uzbekistan, working closely with state-owned utility company Uzbekenergo.
A year ago, Skypower, along with China Huayang Economic and Trade Group Co., a Chinese state-owned company under the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, announced that they have entered into a partnership. Huayang has selected SkyPower to be its global partner to develop, build, and operate large utility-scale solar projects in “key strategic markets” in a number of countries worldwide.
The agreement was signed on June 7, 2017 at SkyPower’s global headquarters, located in Toronto.
Further details on potential projects were not available at press time.
