Sushil Samant to represent generators

The IESO Board of Directors announced on November 2, 2017 the appointment of Sushil Samant of Northland Power to represent Market Participant Generators on the IESO’s Technical Panel (TP).

Mr. Samant has been active in the Ontario power sector and a member of APPrO for more than 16 years. He has worked on a range of issues of interest to generators in recent years including:

• Market Renewal and its associated Stakeholder Engagements

• How Market Renewal may impact Northland’s power contracts

• Integrating Northland’s re-contracted former NUGs into the IESO market

• Integrating Northland’s renewable generation fleet into the IESO market

• Cap and Trade related issues.

    Mr. Samant is also the Chair of APPrO’s Working Group on the IESO TP. In this capacity, he will serve as a liaison between generator members of APPrO and the Technical Panel.

    Since joining Northland Power in 2001, Mr. Samant has worked with a wide range of technologies including gas turbine (simple cycle, combined cycle, cogen), biomass, wind, and solar. He played a key role in integrating Northland’s generation portfolio into the fledgling IMO electricity market, including dealing with PPAs, registration, running the electricity bidding desk, IESO compliance, connection agreements, etc. Currently he holds the title of Director, Gas and Electricity Marketing, at Northland. Prior to that, Mr. Samant was employed at OPG for 11 years where he worked in the nuclear program.
