People from across the energy sector are gearing up for the 29th Annual Canadian Power Conference (APPrO 2017) in Toronto. Each year, Canada’s power professionals attend the industry’s leading power generation event to network with thought leaders and discuss the future of the energy industry.
Past attendees have praised the annual conference for its unparalleled networking opportunities and informed keynotes. “The APPrO Power Conference is a key event for energy sector players in Ontario. Attendees can always count on valuable networking opportunities, informed speakers and timely updates on industry developments,” says Bonnie Hiltz, Manager, Government Relations & Regulatory Affairs, ENGIE. James Gillis, Project Manager, Doherty Engineering, agrees: “[The APPrO Conference] helps you to stay current in the industry. You can always read as much as you want, but when you’re here and you’re listening to people speak that are intimately involved in the details, that’s very valuable. That’s information you wouldn’t otherwise get.”
This year’s theme, Future + Focus, will address the challenges and historic shifts the power industry faces and will face in the 21st century. Taking place on November 20-21 at the Westin Harbour Castle, the conference will discuss the state of the power industry in Ontario, Canada, and North America. The 2017 Conference Program is jam-packed with timely panel discussions and keynote presentations on technology and innovation, cap and trade in Ontario, and governance. Other hot topics include market renewal, LDCs, Ontario’s 2018 election, and the Alberta electricity market.
Speakers include the Hon. Glenn Thibeault, Ontario Minister of Energy; Jan Vrins, Global Energy Practice Leader, Navigant; Francisca Quinn, Quinn & Partners; Peter Gregg, President and CEO, IESO; Greg Lyle, Owner, Innovative Research Group Inc.; and Dan Dolan, President, New England Power Generators Association.
Minister Thibeault spoke to IPPSO FACTO about his keynote speech, which will take place on the first day at the banquet: “As many of our energy sector partners know, our government is currently finalizing the 2017 Long-Term Energy Plan (LTEP), the sector’s roadmap that will help guide the province’s energy-related investments and operations. Without giving too much away, I hope the conference attendees will have a better sense of the important government priorities that are the foundation for the LTEP, such as: ensuring the people of Ontario continue to benefit from a clean, reliable and affordable energy system, while delivering fairness and choice to consumers; creating a more flexible energy system; and responding to the challenges posed by climate change.”
After the keynote, the Hedley Palmer Award and the Women in Renewable Energy Woman of the Year Award will be presented. The next day, Michelle Branigan of Electricity Human Resources Canada will join Rebecca Black and Joanna Osawe of Women in Renewable Energy in a discussion on diversity and employing women in the energy sector.
Sponsors of the event include CanACRE, the University of Waterloo, KPMG, McCarthy Tetrault, Navigant, TransCanada, Borden Ladner Gervais, AB Energy, ENGIE, PowerTel, Northland Power, Stikeman Elliott and DeMarco Allan.
