Speed mentoring accelerates

In what has become an annual event, a group of young people received fast-paced advice from seasoned energy experts during an intensive 90-minute session known as “Speed Mentoring.” Co-ordinated by WiRE, Women in Renewable Energy, and presented in the context of the APPrO 2016 Canadian Power Conference, experienced members of the power industry were paired with young people just entering the work force. Each was able to learn from the other during structured conversations focused on how best to prepare for work in the energy system in the near future. However, all were required to respect the rules of engagement, which required rapid disclosure of issues and obstacles, and sharing of advice, prior to moving on and meeting new mentors and mentees.

“APPrO is pleased to be facilitating innovative ways of bringing bright young minds into potential positions for work in the power sector,” said APPrO Executive Director Jake Brooks. “It’s one of the most popular and fastest-growing parts of our conference.”

This was the second year in which Speed Mentoring was offered by WiRE at the annual APPrO conference. At the 2016 event on November 15, there were 30 ‘mentees’ and 20 mentors who participated in the session. Photos from the session are posted online at this location and further information is available from WiRE or online at this location.
