Peterborough Utilities recently announced completion of the expansion of its London Street small hydro station from 3.8 MW to 9.8 MW, according to the local newspaper KawarthaNOW.
The generating station on the Otonabee River was expanded through the addition of a second powerhouse at a cost of $30 million. The original London Street station was constructed in 1884, and Peterborough Utilities acquired it in 1975.
Peterborough Utilities owns several other hydropower plants, including 6-MW Campbellford on the Trent River, 8-MW Robert G. Lake on the Otonabee River, and 3.9-MW Stanley Adamson on the Otonabee River.
In addition, the utility has entered into two partnerships with the Curve Lake First Nation to build hydro facilities on the Trent-Severn Waterway:
• Peterborough Utilities Buckhorn Hydro LP to develop a 2.5-MW project at Lock 31
• Peterborough Utilities Hydro 24 LP to develop a 3-MW project at Lock 24.
