Municipal Energy Plan (MEP) help available

Officials from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs updated energy stakeholders at the Ontario Energy Board on September 13 outlining ongoing efforts to co-ordinate municipal planning with energy infrastructure planning.

A significant component of the Ministry’s work in this area is making support available to municipalities in preparing energy plans that align with official land use plans. The Municipal Energy Plan (MEP) Program, launched in 2013, is available to all municipalities in Ontario. In summary:

• A MEP is a comprehensive long-term community energy plan designed to align energy, the built environment and land use planning to identify opportunities to:

• Improve energy efficiency

• Reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

• Foster green energy solutions, and

• Support economic development.
