Ontario developing fish strategy

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) is in the process of developing a Provincial Fish Strategy that could have implications for the power generation sector. The Strategy, once approved, will provide updated strategic-level direction for managing fisheries resources in Ontario. In particular, it is intended to establish a vision for the future state of Ontario’s fisheries resources through the development of a set of provincial fisheries goals, objectives and tactics to achieve them.

The main purposes of the Strategy are to improve the conservation and management of Ontario’s fisheries resources; and to encourage fishing as an activity that contributes to the individual well-being and the social, cultural and economic well-being of communities in Ontario.

A draft of the Strategy was posted on the Environmental Registry (EBR Registry Number: 012-0291) for an extended (120 day) comment period on January 21, 2014. The government is inviting stakeholders in the power generation sector to review the draft document and submit comments through the Registry by May 21, 2014. The ministry says, “All comments will be considered in the development of the document and will give us the information we need to develop the best-possible final product.”

Ministry staff are available to discuss the draft Strategy. In order to arrange a meeting or teleconference, please contact Warren Dunlop, Senior Aquatic Ecologist at 705-755-5944 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
