Ontario Smart Grid Forum studies data access

The Ontario Smart Grid Forum has prepared an update on the progress that has been made to address the barriers for third-party access to electricity consumers’ real-time consumption information. “Access to Consumer Data: A Vignette” is now available on the Forum webpage: http://www.ieso.ca/imoweb/pubs/smart_grid/Smart_Grid_Forum_Report-Data_Access_Vignette.pdf.

The issue of data access was raised by the Forum in its May 2011 report, “Modernizing Ontario’s Electricity System – Next Steps,” with recommendations on how to facilitate consumer-controlled third-party access to consumption information. Since then, there have been numerous related developments in Ontario and internationally in regards to standards, technological development and policy discourse. This paper reviews the rationale behind the previous Forum recommendations, summarizes the progress that has been made in this area since then, and highlights some possible emerging solutions.
