Chiefs of Ontario and waterpower industry sign general agreement

Toronto: On October 19 the Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA) and the Chiefs of Ontario (COO) announced that the two organizations had reached agreement on a “Letter of Intent” to provide a framework for communication and collaboration. The agreement is based on the principles of the “Two Row Wampum,” respecting the dignity and integrity of one another and stresses the importance of non-interference. A formal signing ceremony took place at the OWA “Power of Water” Conference.

“I am pleased to have reached an agreement and to sign the “Letter of Intent” with OWA as we have been mandated by the Chiefs in Assembly to renew alliances and form new alliances based on mutual respect,” said Regional Chief Angus Toulouse. “These alliances will assist First Nation communities in building their capacity and in sustainable economic opportunities.”

“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to work directly with the Chiefs of Ontario on matters of shared interest,” said Ian Kerr, Chair of the OWA Board of Directors. “We are committed to collaborating through a relationship founded on mutual respect and recognition.”

Over the last five years the OWA has worked with Aboriginal communities and government agencies to design and deliver a series of practical programs and products focused on enhancing community awareness and understanding of waterpower and improving the ability for communities to be actively involved in project development. In 2008, the Chiefs of Ontario published First Nations Water Declaration in Ontario, outlining the fundamental importance of water to First Nations peoples and the shared responsibility for wise stewardship to future generations.

The Chiefs of Ontario, comprising the 133 First Nations in Ontario, is a political forum and secretariat for collective decision-making, action and advocacy. The Ontario Waterpower Association was formed in May 2001 and represents more than 95% of Ontario waterpower producers. For additional information visit www.owa.ca.
