Ontario's innovation network

The following list is an abbreviated summary of organizations listed by the Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI) as part of Ontario's Regional Innovation Networks, a precursor to the integrated Ontario Network of Excellence called for in former Minister Wilkinson’s speech June 24, 2009. Each grouping listed below is a network in its own right. Numbers 7, 8 and 9 on the map, BioDiscovery Toronto, York Biotech and the Greater Peterborough Area DNA Cluster, with a focus on biomedical / health care sciences, are omitted from this list.

Details presented here are indicative only, as each network will work to some extent in its own way. Not all details could be confirmed by time of publication.

The MRI also works with a number of organizations and think tanks that function at a higher level of abstraction, such as the Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity, which studies the factors behind Ontario’s economic progress; the Ontario Network on the Regional Innovation System and the Centre for Innovation Studies, which study the innovation process itself; and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, where Stephen Hawking is a visiting professor. Although basic scientific research is a critical component in innovation, this issue of IPPSO FACTO is focused on the more commercially-oriented end of the spectrum, and does not address the activity underway in more basic research.

The MRI also lists International Governance Leaders and Organizations Online (IGLOO) as a partner. The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) established IGLOO in November 2004 as an online network to facilitate and promote knowledge exchange among individuals and institutions working, studying or advising on global issues. The project was jointly funded by CIGI and the Government of Ontario. In 2008, the commercialization of the IGLOO software platform through the establishment of IGLOO Incorporated – a stand-alone company that develops, markets and sells the platform – fulfilled one of the key objectives of CIGI’s agreement with the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation.

Headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, CIGI is an international think tank founded in 2002. CIGI's main purpose is to address international governance challenges through world-class research. CIGI strives to identify and generate ideas for global change by studying, advising and networking with scholars, practitioners and governments on the character and desired reforms to multilateral governance issues. Through conferences, workshops, publications, public events and technology, CIGI aims to raise capacity to effect change in public policy both in Canada and around the world. CIGI receives support from the government of Canada and the government of Ontario.
