Alberta’s Blackspring windfarm honoured

Houston: POWER magazine recently announced the Blackspring Ridge Wind Project in Carmangay, Alberta as one of its 2015 Top Plant winners in the renewable generation category.

It’s yet another sign that policies, markets, and customer desires are changing, POWER magazine said: The province most associated with fossil fuels has developed the largest wind farm in Western Canada – right on top of existing gas infrastructure.

Alberta has more than 1,400 MW of operating wind capacity, comprising 37 projects and just under 1,000 total turbines as of September 2015, according to the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA). Those totals rank Alberta third in the nation for installed wind capacity, but the numbers took a big jump in May 2014 when the 300 MW Blackspring wind farm began operations.

The facility, jointly owned by Enbridge Inc. and EDF EN Canada, consists of 166 Vestas V100-1.8 MW wind turbines.
