Hydroelectric power tops Canada’s infrastructure projects list

In terms of value, hydroelectric power dominates infrastructure projects in Canada. In a recent list of the Top 100 Canada’s Biggest Infrastructure Projects for 2015, hydropower took the top four spots, as well as ranking 10 more times.

   Where hydropower fell on the list, along with the value of each:

1. Site C Clean Energy Project, British Columbia, $8.775 billion

2. Muskrat Falls Project, Newfoundland and Labrador, $6.990 billion

3. Romaine Complex, Quebec, $6.500 billion

4. Keeyask Hydroelectric Project, Manitoba, $6.500 billion

15. Lower Mattagami Hydroelectric Complex, Ontario, $2.600 billion

29. Renovations to Beauharnois Hydroelectric Station, Quebec, $1.600 billion

47. John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project, British Columbia, $1.093 billion

55. Waneta Expansion, British Columbia, $900 million

64. Ruskin Dam and Powerhouse Upgrade, British Columbia, $748 million

65. Mica Generating Station Upgrade, British Columbia, $739 million

69. Marmora Pumped Storage Project, Ontario, $700 million

78. Gordon M. Shrum Generating Station Refurbishment, British Columbia, $600 million

82. Pointe du Bois Spillway Replacement Project, Manitoba, $560 million

97. Upper Lillooet Hydro Project, British Columbia, $434 million

          In total, the value of these top 100 projects was $157.9 billion, a 12% increase over 2014, list publisher ReNew Canada says. Hydropower’s value was a total of $38.739 billion, or nearly 25% of the total.

          In addition, seven of the 14 hydro projects are located in the province of British Columbia.

          ReNew Canada is a business magazine that profiles the financing, design, construction and engineering of Canada’s public infrastructure. The magazine has released this list for nine years.
