Alberta First Nation developing biomass power plant

Glenevis, AB: Calgary-based FireBox Energy Systems Ltd. announced a proposed demonstration biomass facility October 14, to be located on the Designated Lands of Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation Reserve #133 near Glenevis, Alberta. The John W. Murray biomass plant will cost an estimated $60 million to complete and will generate approximately 30 megawatts of power.

The Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation says the facility is complementary to its cultural values and the Alberta Government’s guidelines under the Provincial Energy Strategy, by utilizing an efficient, eco-friendly technology to produce power for the Alberta economy. Construction on the demonstration phase is expected to commence early in 2012 and to take approximately 13 months to complete.

FireBox Energy Systems has developed and patented a unique power generation platform under the trade name ‘AirBoiler’. This technology will produce electricity utilizing virtually any type of combustible material as feedstock, but without the need for valuable water.

Once the project has been successfully completed and commissioned, FireBox and partners will proceed to develop a larger, 270 megawatt biomass facility on the same Designated Land.
