GE closing gas-fired plant 20 years early

A number of news outlets reported in late June that General Electric has decided to close down one of its gas-fired generating plants in California twenty years short of its expected lifetime.

The 750-megawatt Inland Empire Energy Center near Los Angeles is only ten years old. But the GE 7H turbines that it uses have underperformed and now even the improved HA-class turbines cannot compete in the state on price with wind and solar power.

GE is selling the plant site to a company that provides battery storage.
