German electric utility E.ON, one of the UK’s largest renewable energy generators, announced July 9 that it had transitioned all of its residential customers in Britain to 100% renewable electricity at no extra cost, a move that now provides more than 3.3 million British households with 100% renewable electricity.
E.ON will use a combination of electricity generated from its own fleet of renewable energy sources as well as direct purchase agreements with independent wind generators around the country. Any remaining electricity not matched with locally-generated renewable electricity will be matched with 100% renewable electricity sourced externally through renewable electricity guarantee certificates from the likes of wind, biomass, and solar sources.
