Massachusetts, Rhode Island contract for 1.2 GW offshore wind

The US states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island announced May 23 having selected bids for a total of 1.2 GW of capacity from a pair of offshore windpower facilities. This was an historic landmark in terms of the volume contracted in a single day.

Massachusetts awarded a competitive bid of 800 MW from Vineyard Wind. Deepwater Wind was the winning bidder in a competitive offshore wind procurement process between Rhode Island and Massachusetts. It was selected to construct the 400-MW Revolution Wind project.

The two projects are notable for using the latest family of giant wind turbines. See also “Technical advances expanding the reach of windpower,” in the April issue of IPPSO FACTO.
