Microgrids are “inching their way into the mainstream,” according to a recent story in the online news site Utility Dive.
The story notes the US$425 million acquisition in June by Southern Company of PowerSecure International by forming a strategic alliance with Advanced Microgrid Solutions to jointly develop and deploy behind-the- meter distributed energy resources across the United States.
Utility Dive observes that “Not so long ago, microgrids were seen as a threat to utilities, a third-party encroachment that could eat away at their traditional business model,” especially with demand growth having become slow to flat. With its acquisition of PowerSecure, Southern can now “play both offense and defense,” generating earnings from a new business, by having swallowed a potential competitor.
