Planned Tunisian solar farm proposed to supply Europe

The Guardian reported September 6 on a 4.5 gigawatt solar park planned in Tunisia that would be built to export electricity to Europe, through submarine cables to Malta, Italy and France.

Proponent company TuNur says, depending on approval by Tunisia’s government, it would be delivering power via Malta by 2021, followed by cables to Italy and France by 2024.

The Guardian notes, however, that an earlier proposal with a similar objective, the Desertec Industrial Initiative, abandoned its plans in 2013, leaving a residual wariness in the region about such mega energy projects.
