China commissions 2 more massive hydro dams

The China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) announced on July 10 that all the generating units of the Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba Hydropower Stations had been commissioned. Located on the Jinsha River, the Xiluodu Hydropower Station is the world’s third largest and China’s second largest hydroelectric project. The installed capacity of the two stations, Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba, is 20,260 MW and the average yearly electricity generation is 88 TWh, equivalent to commissioning another Three Gorges Project.

The Corporation pointed to several world records related to the Xiangjiaba Project:

• The largest span and height of an underground power house anywhere in the world

• The largest installed capacity single turbine generating unit

• Highest “discharging rate” among all hydropower projects

• World’s longest conveyer belt

• World’s largest artificial aggregate processing system.

CTG has been developing four cascade hydropower plants, i.e., Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Baihetan, and Wudongde, on Jinshajiang, which is an upstream part of the Yangtze River. The four power plants will have a combined capacity of 38,000 MW, nearly twice of that of the Three Gorges project. Xiluodu alone is 11,600 MW and Xiangjiaba alone is 8,660 MW.

The China Three Gorges Corporation is a state-owned Chinese power company, established on September 27 1993. The company was responsible for construction of the Three Gorges Dam project, at 22,500 MW, the world’s largest hydroelectric power plant, that went into operation in 2008.
