The Chinese government has reportedly canceled a major coal fired power plant because of concerns about air emissions. The decision appears to be the first of its type from China, which has been developing coal fired power at a rapid pace in recent years. According to a report from Power Magazine, the 2-GW project was stopped during a pre-construction phase. Authorities in Baguang, eastern Shenzhen, asked the Shenzhen Energy Group to stop work, and indicated they do not plan to build any other type of coal fired power plant in its place.
Air pollution has been a serious problem in China and there has been an official call to find ways to reduce emissions where possible.
