The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) says peak demand for electricity reached 33,452 MW on July 6, representing the third-highest peak in state history. The NYISO says that despite the load, the state’s electric grid performed well during the high peak demand.
“Thanks to the significant private investment of resources in our system over the past 10 years and the innovative, market-driven demand-response programs now in place, our system was well prepared to meet the near-record peak demand,” says NYISO President and CEO Stephen Whitley.
The NYISO notes that since 2000, New York has added more than 7.6 GW of new generation capacity, nearly 1.3 GW of new transmission capacity and over 2.2 GW of market-driven demand-response resources.
